Self Portrait Critique

For my critique, the group overall got the general idea of fun and festive. Mostly because my piece looks like a pinata from all of the tissue paper. All the crinkly paper and the way the project was shaped gave it an after party/trashy effect. What i was going for was something wrapped up inside and held by these multicolored, happy twirly wires.

Identity essentials

For my photos, I decided to take a spin on the role of age. I wanted to capture teens in their natural habits, i.e goofing off, playing games or lounging around by photographing hands. Hands are the best tools an artist can have in the long run so i figured I would include them.

Thats good, for a white girl ( 10/29)

It's been a while since I've updated, sooo here it goes,

Women's Art!

Talking about the feminist movements,
Women started to want their art more seperated from men, but once art is seperated between genders then people's interest in womens work diminishes.

  1. Essentials ( identity)
    1. personal
    2. body
    3. sexuality
    4. vaginal iconography
    5. afirm female attributes
  2. Material/techniques unique to women
    1. sewing
    2. jewelry
  3. Activist (activism)
    1. performance
    2. sisterhood
  4. Distinguish art of men and women
This lecture was pretty interesting since we focused on art made by women. I'm probably a little biased but I don't think that women get enough recognition. Thats sort of what I got from the lecture is that women are important, but they still arent as recognized as great artists. I don't think people do it on purpose, we just havn't moved on from past cultural thinkings. It was great to have a femal photographer come and speak. Her photographs of women in natural poses were very interesting to see and proves that women can make great work.

Modular Madness completed!

First I want to give thanks to Elise for giving me the awesome idea of using fake blood. Definitely got a reaction :]
That stuff tastes so disgusting.
Anyway, my critique went well, overall the piece worked well except for the fitting. It was supposed to sit on my head a different way but to get the blood to work I moved it forward and pressed it down. But either way, it still requires balancing to wear.
There could be many underlying tones and metaphors that this crown has, especially with the addition of adding blood. For one, the crown can look like part of an ice queens outfit, or with all of the spikes, it can be a stylized representation of lady liberty. Another one is the crown of thorns that Jesus wears that draws blood to drip down his face. Whatever way it is interpreted, I'm glad that people gained different views of it.
